THE MATHTEXLAB TOOLBOX
LaTeX Matrix Generator
Build a matrix visually with editable cells, six bracket styles and LaTeX output. Paste spreadsheet values, preview the result, and export SVG, PNG or PDF.
ROWS, COLUMNS AND A LITTLE TEX
What is a LaTeX matrix?
A matrix arranges entries into rows and columns. LaTeX describes that
structure with an environment, an ampersand & between
columns and a double backslash \\ between rows. The bracket
style changes its appearance; it does not calculate a determinant, inverse
or norm.
This generator writes that structure for you. Fill each cell with a number or a mathematical expression, then inspect the actual MathJax preview. Empty cells become zero. You can build a row vector, a column vector or a matrix up to 12 × 12. The generated code groups each cell in braces so its math styling stays inside that cell.
Create a matrix in a few steps
- Choose dimensions. Enter 1–12 rows and columns or choose a quick size. Shrinking the grid hides values; growing it again restores them within the 12 × 12 limit. Removing an individual row or column shifts the following entries.
-
Fill the cells. Enter values such as
-2,x^2,\alphaor\frac{1}{2}. Presets replace the cells, with Undo available. Identity makes a square matrix using the larger current dimension; Diagonal uses 1, 2, 3… on the diagonal and zeros elsewhere. - Check the preview. Fix any highlighted cell before copying or exporting. The grid owns row and column separators; cells accept individual expressions, not nested environments, comments or alignment commands. The renderer supports the same base and AMS commands as the equation editor.
- Copy or export. Copy LaTeX for a document, or choose SVG, PNG or PDF. Open in Equation Editor stages the matrix locally and asks before replacing the editor’s current source.
Use Tab to move across cells, Enter or ↑/↓ for vertical movement, and ←/→ at the ends of a cell’s text to reach its neighbors. Shift+Enter moves up. Tab from the final cell leaves the grid. Paste plain tab-separated spreadsheet cells at the focused cell; the grid grows to fit. A block extending past row or column 12 is rejected without changing the matrix. Ragged pasted rows fill missing entries with zero.
The builder saves one matrix locally when browser storage is available. It does not share the equation editor’s draft. Undo history is kept for this visit only. Keep your own copy of important LaTeX before leaving or clearing browser storage.
Choose a matrix environment
| Environment | Appearance |
|---|---|
matrix |
No brackets |
pmatrix |
Parentheses ( ) |
bmatrix |
Square brackets [ ] |
Bmatrix |
Curly braces { } |
vmatrix |
Single vertical bars | |, often used for a square matrix’s determinant |
Vmatrix |
Double vertical bars ‖ ‖ |
Capitalization matters: bmatrix and Bmatrix use
different delimiters. A rectangular matrix can be typeset with bars, but a
determinant has its usual meaning for square matrices. Choosing bars does
not evaluate the entries. See the
matrix notation guide for more
examples.
Common matrix examples
A two-by-two identity matrix
Ones on the main diagonal and zeros elsewhere. Choose 2×2 and Identity to create this structure in the builder.
\begin{pmatrix}
{1} & {0} \\
{0} & {1}
\end{pmatrix}
A column vector with mathematical entries
Choose 3×1, then put one expression in each cell. Keep command arguments in
braces, as in \frac{1}{2}.
\begin{bmatrix}
{\alpha} \\
{\frac{1}{2}} \\
{x^2}
\end{bmatrix}
For command help, read the symbol reference or fraction guide. The builder’s visual controls and presets change the grid; these source examples are ordinary selectable text you can copy into a document.
Use the generated code in a LaTeX document
Load amsmath in the document preamble, then paste the generated
matrix inside a mathematical display such as \[ ... \]. Do not
paste the document preamble or display delimiters into the MathTexLab
equation editor; it expects mathematical source only.
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{document}
\[
\begin{pmatrix}
1 & 0 \\
0 & 1
\end{pmatrix}
\]
\end{document}
For 11 or 12 columns: standard amsmath documents normally
allow 10 matrix columns. Add
\setcounter{MaxMatrixCols}{12} after
\usepackage{amsmath} in the preamble. This setup is separate
from the copied matrix expression. MathTexLab’s MathJax preview supports the
builder’s 12-column limit directly. A wide matrix may also need a smaller
display size or a different page layout in its destination.

A FEW PRACTICAL DETAILS
Matrix generator questions
Can I paste from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Focus a cell and paste a plain-text block whose columns are separated by tabs and rows by newlines. The builder expands within 12 × 12 and preserves cells outside the pasted rectangle. It does not interpret spreadsheet formulas, CSV quoting, HTML or workbook files.
Why does a cell show an error?
Check balanced braces and supported commands. Cells accept a single mathematical expression; row separators, unescaped ampersands, comments and environments belong to the matrix structure and are rejected. The tool limits each cell to 256 characters and generated math to 10,000 characters.
Does changing size delete my values?
Shrinking the grid keeps hidden values available for later growth up to 12 × 12. Removing a specific row or column, clearing, resetting or choosing a preset changes values; Undo restores earlier states during the current visit. Reloading does not retain Undo history.
Will opening the editor erase my existing equation?
No source is replaced automatically. A same-tab, browser-local handoff opens a review panel in the editor. Choose Load matrix into editor to replace its source, or Keep current equation to decline. After loading, Undo restores your previous source until you leave that editor page. The matrix itself has a separate saved draft.
Are matrix exports transparent?
SVG and PNG can have a transparent or white background. Glyphs use the selected equation color; check it against the destination. PDF is a cropped vector page and viewers normally show white. Copy matrix writes PNG when the browser allows image clipboard access; download PNG if copying is unavailable.
Is the matrix uploaded anywhere?
Rendering, generation and export run in your browser. One matrix is saved in local browser storage unless you pause it. The handoff uses temporary session storage, not source text in a URL. See the Privacy Policy for storage keys, retention and ordinary hosting requests.
