Build a text table without counting separators
A LaTeX table arranges text into columns using the
tabular environment. This builder handles the column
specification, row endings and special-character escaping while you work
with ordinary text. It is useful for measurements, comparison tables and
small datasets. It does not calculate spreadsheet formulas.
A text table differs from a mathematical matrix: a table belongs in a
document’s text flow, while a matrix belongs inside a mathematical
expression. For fractions, Greek letters and other mathematical cells, use
the Matrix Generator. Do not
paste a tabular environment into the
Equation Editor; its MathJax
renderer handles mathematical notation, not LaTeX documents.
How to create your LaTeX table
- Choose dimensions. Set 1–12 rows and columns. The header counts as a row. Shrinking the dimensions hides cells; expanding restores them. Removing a selected row or column shifts the following entries. Undo restores a previous change.
- Enter or paste text. Select a cell and paste plain tab-separated spreadsheet data. The grid expands within its limit. Blocks that exceed the limit are rejected in full. Each cell holds up to 256 characters; ragged rows fill missing entries with blank text.
- Set the layout. Choose left, center or right alignment for each column, then horizontal rules, a full grid or no lines. Toggle a bold header row. The browser preview reflects these choices.
- Copy or download. Copy the table snippet into a LaTeX document, outside math delimiters. Download .tex creates a minimal document containing the current table. Compile it in your LaTeX application.
An optional caption adds a table float with
\centering. A reference label requires a caption and must start
with a letter; for example, tab:measurements. Reference it with
\ref{tab:measurements} in the destination document. LaTeX
decides where a float fits; the preview does not predict page placement.
Understand the generated tabular source
The column specification {lr} means a left-aligned first column
and a right-aligned second column. An unescaped & separates
cells, \\ ends a row, and \hline draws a
horizontal rule. A simple comparison table looks like this:
\begin{tabular}{lr}
\hline
\textbf{Item} & \textbf{Price} \\
\hline
Notebook & 4.50 \\
Pen & 1.20 \\
\hline
\end{tabular}
Special characters are treated as literal text. Typing
R&D costs 50% produces R\&D costs 50\%, so
the ampersand cannot accidentally create another column. Backslashes, dollar
signs, underscores, braces, hash signs, carets and tildes are escaped too.
Enter ordinary text, not already escaped TeX: \alpha stays
visible text rather than becoming a Greek letter.
The generated table uses standard LaTeX commands and does not require booktabs, array or longtable. The .tex download uses the article class. Your destination engine and fonts determine Unicode support; a character displayed by your browser is not proof that a particular LaTeX font can typeset it. Wide tables may exceed a document’s text width. Adjust dimensions or layout in the destination document.
For the underlying syntax and examples, see Overleaf’s table documentation.
PRACTICAL DETAILS
Table generator questions
Is the preview compiled LaTeX?
No. It is a browser table showing your content, column alignment, header and border choices. Final typography, row spacing, pagination and float placement depend on a real LaTeX engine. MathJax does not compile tabular documents here.
Can I use merged cells, formulas or raw LaTeX?
This version creates rectangular text tables. It does not support merged cells, multi-line cells, formula evaluation, raw TeX commands or mathematical cell rendering. Use the mathematical Matrix Generator for math expressions. Keep spreadsheet data in plain tab-separated form; quoted CSV is not parsed.
Can I export a table as PNG, SVG or PDF?
This tool provides LaTeX source and a .tex document. It does not offer image or PDF exports from its approximate browser preview. Compile the downloaded document in a LaTeX application to produce the final PDF. Mathematical equations can use the separate Equation Editor’s image exports.
Where is my table saved?
One table draft, including hidden cells and layout settings, is saved in this browser’s local storage when available. It is not uploaded. Forget saved table removes that draft and pauses saving for the visit; current cells stay visible. Undo history is kept only for this visit. Browser storage is not a backup.
Why did my paste fail?
A pasted block must fit within row and column 12 and have at most 256 characters per cell. Choose an earlier starting cell or split the data into smaller tables. Nothing is partially pasted on a size failure. Tab and newline delimit cells and rows; they cannot be embedded inside a cell.
