IMAGES & EXPORTS
Export a LaTeX equation as PNG, SVG or PDF
Examples checked with MathTexLab’s base and AMS math renderer · Display style
Choose SVG when the destination accepts scalable artwork, PNG when it expects an image, or PDF when you want a cropped vector page. The equation should render successfully before you export it. MathTexLab generates these files in your browser; no equation-rendering service receives your draft.
PNG, SVG or PDF?
| Format | Useful when | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Your slide, document or message accepts raster images. | It has a fixed pixel size. Enlarging it later can reveal blur. Supports transparent or white backgrounds. |
| SVG | The destination accepts SVG and you need an equation that scales cleanly. | Some applications restrict SVG. MathTexLab includes glyph paths and styles in the file, so it does not depend on a separate web font. |
| You need a cropped vector page to share or place in another document. | A viewer normally displays a white page. The Transparent checkbox controls SVG/PNG backgrounds, not PDF page appearance. |
Keep a copy of the LaTeX source as well. An exported image is a result you can place elsewhere; it does not replace the easiest-to-edit version of your formula.
Export an equation in four steps
- Open or enter an expression. Use the example below, then wait for “Your equation is ready.” Fix syntax errors before downloading.
- Set the appearance. Choose font size, equation color and Display or Inline math style. The website theme does not change your selected equation color.
- Choose an image background. Leave Transparent checked for an SVG or PNG without a white rectangle, or turn it off for a white image background.
- Download the format you need. Use SVG, Export PNG or PDF. Open the saved file in its destination and check the result at the size you intend to use.

Get transparency and color right
Transparency means there is no painted background behind the glyphs. It does not make the glyphs adapt to their destination. Dark text can disappear on a dark slide, and white text can disappear on a white document.
For an uncertain destination, choose a dark equation color and turn Transparent off to produce a white-background image. For a dark slide, choose a light equation color and a transparent image. The editor’s preview canvas stays pale in both site themes, so a very light equation can be difficult to inspect there.
Check transparency against a colored background in the destination. A file viewer may show white behind a transparent image even when the file’s background is actually transparent.
Why a PNG can look blurry after resizing
A PNG stores a grid of pixels. MathTexLab normally creates it at up to three times the current equation size, but reduces that multiplier when dimension or pixel-area limits apply. Very large exports are bounded to protect browser memory. Increasing the display font size can give a small equation more pixels; it does not create infinite resolution.
SVG and PDF retain vector geometry for the typeset equation and are preferable when you expect to enlarge it significantly. Vector artwork can still look small inside a document if the destination places it at a small physical size.
\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}e^{-x^2}\,dx=\sqrt{\pi}Open example in editor Tall notation such as integral bounds and fractions makes vertical room important. Leave enough height in the destination instead of stretching the equation unevenly. For source layout help, see fractions and matrices.
Copy LaTeX and Copy equation do different jobs
Copy LaTeX puts editable source text on the clipboard. Copy equation puts a PNG image on the clipboard. Image copying needs browser support, permission and a secure context such as HTTPS or localhost. If the browser blocks it, download the PNG instead.
Copying an image does not guarantee that the receiving application will preserve transparency, scale or embedded metadata. Try the downloaded file when pasting behaves differently from the preview. You can always select the source manually if text-clipboard access is unavailable.
A short check before sharing
- Does the expression say what you intend? MathTexLab typesets notation; it does not verify the mathematical claim.
- Are the color and background readable in the actual destination?
- Are roots, fraction bars, accents and matrix brackets visible without cropping?
- Does a PNG have enough pixels for the size at which you placed it?
- Have you kept the source for future edits?
The export buttons remain disabled for empty, invalid or still-rendering input. If a valid expression exceeds browser limits, split it into smaller expressions. No registration or full LaTeX document is needed.
