MATH, WITHOUT THE DOCUMENT SETUP

What is a LaTeX equation editor?

From a line of code to a clear equation

LaTeX describes mathematical notation with short text commands. An equation editor turns that source into a typeset expression, so a fraction, integral or matrix is easier to read than a line of ordinary text.

MathTexLab focuses on individual mathematical expressions. Use it to prepare a formula for a lesson, presentation, research note or web page. You don’t need to create a document, install a TeX distribution or sign in.

Keep the LaTeX source when you want to edit the expression later. Download an image or PDF when you want to place the finished equation in another application.

A SHORT PATH FROM SOURCE TO SHARING

How to use the editor

No LaTeX experience required.
  1. Write or choose an example

    Enter an expression in LaTeX source, without $ or $$ delimiters. Try x^{2}+y^{2}=r^{2}, or choose an example below to load a complete formula.

  2. Build and refine your equation

    Put the cursor where you want a symbol, then select one from the toolbar. Replace its sample letters with your values. Use the live preview to check the result, and the size, color and math-style controls to adjust it.

  3. Copy or download the result

    Copy LaTeX for editable source or Copy equation for a PNG image. Choose SVG for scalable artwork, PNG for an image, or PDF for a cropped vector page. Transparency applies to SVG and PNG.

A useful habit

Group multi-character powers with braces: x^{n+1}. If you make a mistake, use Undo or Ctrl/⌘ + Z. Press Tab to leave the source editor and reach the next control.

BUILT AROUND THE EQUATION

Supported features

Back to the editor

Source and live preview

Syntax highlighting, undo and redo, automatic preview updates and useful syntax errors. Edit up to 10,000 characters per expression.

Discoverable math tools

Insert fractions, roots, Greek letters, integrals, sums, matrices, arrows, sets and common operators at the cursor.

Control the appearance

Choose a 16–64 px equation font size, a color and display or inline math style. Light and dark website themes share the same export settings.

Files that travel well

Download self-contained SVG, PNG with a transparent or white background, or vector PDF. Image copying depends on your browser’s clipboard support.

A draft on this device

Your current expression and settings save automatically in this browser when storage is available. There is no account or cloud sync.

MathJax base and AMS math

Use common mathematical commands and environments such as pmatrix, cases and aligned. Full documents and additional packages are outside this editor’s scope.

LEARN FROM A WORKING EXPRESSION

Practical LaTeX equation examples

Choose an example to edit

Load a complete expression into the editor, then change its values. Choosing an example replaces the current source; Undo restores your previous work.

Fractions and roots

x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}

The quadratic formula combines a fraction, a square root and a plus-or-minus sign. Keep each grouped expression inside its braces.

Definite integrals

\int_{0}^{1} x^2\,dx = \frac{1}{3}

The subscript and superscript set the integration bounds. The small space before dx separates the integrand from the differential.

A two-by-two matrix

\begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}

Use & between columns and \\ between rows. The pmatrix environment supplies the parentheses.

A FEW THINGS WORTH KNOWING

Frequently asked questions

Still need help?
Is this a full LaTeX document editor?

No. MathTexLab edits mathematical expressions. It doesn’t compile document preambles, chapters, bibliographies or document layouts. Enter only your equation, without \documentclass, \begin{document} or dollar-sign delimiters.

Which LaTeX commands are supported?

The renderer uses MathJax’s base and AMS mathematics packages. Fractions, roots, Greek letters, sums, integrals, matrices, cases, common operators and aligned equations are supported. Package loading, custom macro definitions, HTML, links, and the physics and chemistry packages are not supported. An unknown command produces an error instead of a downloadable result.

How do I write a multiline or aligned equation?

Use the aligned environment. Put & before the relation you want to align and \\ between rows:

\begin{aligned}
a &= b+c \\
d &= e+f
\end{aligned}

Select Display math style for more spacious notation. A plain newline in the source is not a new mathematical row.

Which export format should I choose?

SVG keeps the equation sharp at any size. PNG is useful when your destination accepts images but not SVG. PDF produces a cropped vector page for sharing or placing in another document. SVG and PNG can use a transparent or white background. PDF viewers normally display a white page; the Transparent option is for image exports. See the equation image export guide for resolution, color and clipboard advice.

Why can’t I copy the rendered equation?

Copy equation writes a PNG image to the clipboard. Your browser needs image-clipboard support, permission and a secure connection (HTTPS or localhost). If copying is unavailable, use Export PNG. You can also select the source manually if Copy LaTeX is blocked.

Are my equations uploaded or saved online?

The application renders and exports equations on your device. It saves one draft and your appearance settings in this browser’s local storage; there is no server-side equation store or cloud sync. Visiting the site still requests its files from the host. See the Privacy Policy for the distinction and how to remove a saved draft.

How do I fix a LaTeX syntax error?

Check for a missing brace, a command typed without its backslash, or a mismatched environment name. For example, \frac{a}{b} needs both groups, and \begin{pmatrix} must end with \end{pmatrix}. Start with a working example and make one change at a time. Exports remain unavailable until the expression renders successfully.

Why is my exported equation hard to see?

The export uses your chosen equation color. White or pale glyphs may disappear on a white background, and dark glyphs may be difficult to see on a dark destination. Choose a contrasting color or use an opaque white image background. The preview canvas stays pale in both website themes to show your chosen output color consistently.
